The FOUR-WAY TEST

THE FOUR-WAY TEST OF THE THINGS WE THINK, SAY, OR DO:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

Honesty is the foundation of trust. Rotarians strive to communicate openly and truthfully in all aspects of life.

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Fairness requires us to consider the impact of our actions on others and to treat people with respect and integrity.

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Rotary places a strong emphasis on relationships. We aim to build connections based on mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation.

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

True success is measured not only by individual gain, but by the positive impact our actions have on others and our community.

What is the Four-Way Test?

One of the most enduring principles of Rotary is the Four-Way Test — a simple but powerful guide for ethical decision-making in both our professional and personal lives.

Created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, the Four-Way Test has become one of the most widely quoted statements of business ethics in the world. It challenges Rotarians to evaluate their actions, decisions, and communications through four simple questions.

A Guiding Principle for Rotarians

The Four-Way Test is more than a set of questions — it is a philosophy that guides Rotarians in their businesses, professions, and service to others. By applying these principles daily, Rotarians strive to lead with integrity, strengthen relationships, and create positive change in their communities.

For members of the Rotary Club of South Florida Business Leaders, the Four-Way Test serves as a reminder that leadership and service must always be grounded in ethics, fairness, and respect for others.
